Set project research: Complex Geometries

Complex Geometries is a fashion  brand created by Clayton Evans. Clayton was studying art in college but began creating clothes whilst studying and came to a realisation point that he enjoyed fashion design more than the mediums used in his course. He was excited about creating his brand as he found his true passion and the fashion industry was more welcoming to him than expected. Additionally he is a self taught designer and acknowledged his skills by studying pieces and understanding why they were made a certain way but also as a child used to look at his grandmother create patterns and the people he was working with. He is very proud that he is self taught even though sometimes he wishes that he had done some form of formal training.

The name for the brand came to him when he was watching a documentary on geometry and was fascinated by how something seems so simple when in reality it is more complicated. He then decided to name his brand Complex Geometries as his designs may seem simple but when worn are an overlay of fabrics which create illusions.

He is fascinated by the fact that his costumers are diverse and their goal is comfort and creativity. He also creates clothes which are universal and unisex that compliment the body. What makes this designer unique is the fact that he wants to create pieces which will be different on each costumer hence will be unique and will fit their personal style and preferences.

What I found amazing is that really Mr Clayton bases his designs on real world peoples problems and his collections have themes such as "to create modesty or conceal shame" which is something that most designers do not think about. His collections also represent himself which for example the colour palettes for the designs are the same as the ones he is wearing which are neutral tones. He also states that the journey is more important than the destination which is something most designers lack of. In my opinion due to fashion moving that fast and there is always that hustle to create something new most designers forget why they went into fashion school, what their aim is and most importantly to have fun and enjoy their job which is something Evans does not forget to do and it is really reflected on his work. Realism is the word which describes him, his work and his brand from the few articles I read. It is also seen that he cares about people and most importantly wants practical clothes which will fit any body type and will not bring out the deepest insecurities of people. If I am being honest I had never heard of this brand before my tutorial with Mr Sam but now I am really glad I learned more about it as this type of research teaches you how to be human, build character but also draw inspiration from artists to look forward to and not forget your goals. Fashion wise I like his clothes as they seem comfortable, fashionable but also colour sensible. This research also helped me for my set project as I have to study pieces especially for the 3D piece to understand how to drape and sew correctly and that irregular and imperfect is still beautiful just like fallen angels which are used as a metaphor for humans.

  1. Realism in fashion design is a concept that all too often gets overlooked and if you are designing for people to WANT to wear your clothing or if you have a message (whether that is your use of sustainable materials) or connect to your audience (through attitude, slogans, lifestyles etc) then you need to base your work in the 'real world'. It's worth taking some sketches from the designs you have featured here (as an exercise) to give you a better sense of the work you are going to make and how you can adapt this approach to your project.
