Set Project: Artist Research-Gucci

Another artist which is related to my project is Guccio Gucci and the brand Gucci. The reason in which I will be looking at this specific designer is due to his ethics and as he was one of the first people to revolutionise fashion. Along with that I am interested in his most recent designs for Billie Eilish which have his graphic logos on them in a revolutionised manner.

Guccio Gucci

Guccio Gucci the now founder of Gucci, was the son of an Italian merchant in which in his young years, decided to travel to London and Paris in 1898 in which he worked at the Savoy hotel in London. Once he gained inspiration from the cultures, he decided that it was time to return to Florence in Italy and began selling saddles and saddlebags but due to the fall in demand for horses due to the creation of automobiles, he began selling other accessories. He developed excellent leather craftsman skills and managed to open a small luggage store in Florence and to fund a leather goods company. In 1921 his reputation began to grow due to the craftsmanship skills he developed from Tuscan artisans and the culture in London. 9 years later he became so known for his high quality products that International clients flew to Italy to buy the revolutionary goods he created which were shoes, bags, belts, gloves and trunks. He went on to create the Horsebit icon which provided riding gear due to having a rise in aristocrat horse riding clients.

In 1932 he created the iconic loafer shoe with a glided snaffle hence expanding his business to Rome increasing his reputation and income. Gucci also had to experiment with different ways of creating materials such as fabric and bag handles by using hemp, linen, jute and even created a new method to use cane which became a known innovation in the industry as he burnished cane to create the handle of the Bamboo bag that drew inspiration from the shape of a saddle. At the age of 72 in 1953 Guccio Gucci died hence out of his six children, the four named Aldo, Vasco, Ugo and Rodolfo took over the business and continued growing his legacy.

His four sons had each entitled tasks to grow the business. Rodolfo, managed the company's Italian interests whilst managing the opening of a store in Milan, along with Vasco supervising the business actions in Florence and Aldo moved to New York to open the first Gucci boutique. Anything involving riding was a very important feature in the Gucci brand as the green, red and green stripe which was created in the 1950s was inspired from a traditional saddle girth. Although his sons had took over family disputes took over but managed to keep Gucci going on successfully and in the 60s had managed to dress iconic stars like Jackie Kennedy and create the Hobo unisex bag and the silk print scarf which is now trending.

London, Paris, Beverly Hills and Palm Beach had the pride to see the double intersecting G logo and the Beverly Hills store also hosted VIP private sessions for stars to look at exclusive designs. In the 70s Gucci created its first ready to wear collection and expanded towards Hong Kong and Tokyo which finally made Gucci an iconic international brand, innovative with its high quality Italian roots. This move made Gucci even more famous than before but unfortunately in 1982 the brand had financial issues hence was passed onto the son of Rodolfo named Maurizio Gucci making it a public limited company. In the early 90s Gucci was fully bought time by time by Investcorp and Bergdorf Goodman was hired as the new creative director passed on to Tom Ford giving Gucci the shine it deserved once again. Gucci became a fully public company in 1995 when Domenico de Sole became the CEO. Tom Ford left Gucci in 2004 and by the time he left he turned Gucci into a must have brand and urged the need for each celebrity to own Gucci.

Frida Giannini became the new creative director of Gucci in 2006 and managed to name Gucci one of the most desirable brands in the world according to Nielsen. In 2010 Gucci launched its children collection and began producing garments only in Italy. This iconic brand complements its heritage and combines modernity with timeless designs. I chose Gucci as one of my designer research as it is one of the oldest and successful brands up to date which never fails to amaze me along with crowds with new innovative designs constantly. I am satisfied with my research as this gives me passion to enter the industry as it showcases the saying never give up or fall down, stand up again and gives me the ethics I need to get back again whenever I feel unmotivated. To conclude I also chose Gucci specifically for the designs created specifically for Billie Eilish which is an American singer which wears Gucci all the time hence there is no question about its fame and also has everything personalised with Green as shown below which is her colour. I am inspired by how the Gucci logo and graphics were motivated hence they drew an inspiration in my collection.
