Set Project: Research on Materials
In my opinion the foundation of each collection begins with the variety of fabrics a designer has in mind. For this collection due to it having to be affordable since it is for students, I decided not to make it sustainable. The reason for this is because sustainable and organic materials tend to be expensive as they are harder to manufacture. Below I will be illustrating the fabrics I will use and some will be in comparison to the sustainable fabric price wise.
In addition leather will also be used for the manufacture of bags.
Cotton
The average price of cotton which I found is about 7.15 dollars per yard which converted to pounds rounds up to 5.07 pounds(1). This is much cheaper as the 100% organic cotton per yard is about 25.55 Australian dollars which coverts to 14.10 pounds which is about 3 times more the price of a yard of non sustainable cotton(2).
Below is an example of the organic cotton I will be using in most designs compared to sustainable cotton.
This fabric is suitable for skirts and ruched details on garments especially for hot climates as it is breathable and flowy. It is a combination of spandex, polyester and lycra sometimes. I chose this fabric as it is ranging from 8(3) and 9(4) pounds per yard which is suitable and very affordable for my audience.
Fabric Paint
The other main material needed for this collection is fabric paint. Fabric paint is a specific paint where you can draw on clothes and it will not come out even after washing as it is modified like that. This paint will be used for my graphic designs which will be painted on the garments in detail and the reason for this is to accentuate the theme of the fallen angel. The paint I found is about 10 pounds for a 500ml bottle hence it is ideal for its pricing and use(5).
Leather, rubber, wood and plastic
These components are used to make high heels and flat sole shoes. I will be using these products for the manufacture of the heels as it is cheaper and also this method has been used for years in the fashion industry and it makes heels long lasting. Here are some examples of the heels made from these materials(6).
Metal will also be used for the bag straps most probably as it is affordable and durable.
Mesh
Mesh will be trending this season and I believe it is ideal as it is subtly sexy but elegant as one can choose how to style it and how much to show. It is also amazing camouflage on the skin if one is not as comfortable. It It is also affordable as it costs 2 pounds per 25cm (7).
